Itinerary
Day 1 – Beaufort, SC
Arrive today in Beaufort, SC and check into your local hotel for a two-night stay. Dinner is included this evening at a local restaurant. (D)
Day 2 – Hunting Island Dolphin Cruise – Free Time in Historic Downtown Beaufort – Horse-Drawn Carriage Tour – The Chocolate Tree – Low Country Boil
This morning, enjoy a Hunting Island Dolphin Cruise. This ecotour explores the salt marsh estuary as we look for native bottlenose dolphins. See bald eagles, ospreys and other native birds of prey (including nests!). Plus, brown pelicans diving for fish and other fascinating birds like roseate spoonbills, wood storks, herons, egrets and shorebirds!
The on-board naturalist will share also interesting facts about local history as it intertwines with the natural history of these waters dating from the prehistoric habitation of the indigenous people to the very first western European settlers in our state in the mid-seventeenth century.
Next, you will have free time for lunch on own and shopping in Historic Downtown Beaufort. explore the local shops and purchase a souvenir or two. Downtown Beaufort is home to a wide range of apparel stores filled with stylish clothing and accessories, and home to a variety of art galleries featuring eye-catching collectibles. There are many restaurants located on Bay Street serving delicious Southern food to choose from.
The afternoon also includes a Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride. Re-live the past through the narration of professional guides and the clippity-clop of the horses. Learn about Beaufort’s Civil War History, see Antebellum and Victorian Architecture as well as Hollywood movie sites.
Next, visit The Chocolate Tree. If you’ve seen the film Forrest Gump, then you’ve caught a glimpse of the amazing chocolates made at The Chocolate Tree in Beaufort, SC. The box of chocolates that Forrest offers to Jenny in the film was provided by the shop! The master candy makers at The Chocolate Tree craft fresh chocolates and confections in-house using only the freshest ingredients. Day 3 – Gullah Heritage Tour – Depart for Home
After breakfast, meet your local guide for a Gullah Heritage Tour. Travel back in time to explore the Gullah and Geechee heritage of South Carolina’s Sea Islands. On this 3-hour tour, get ready to soak up some history and take in the sights: Discover Lady’s Island, St. Helena, Hunting Island and more. See the site of one of the country’s first schools for freed slaves – a local treasure and National Historic Landmark Marvel at the ruins of island churches and learn the stories and songs that are part of their rich history.
