Itinerary
Day 1 – Jekyll Island – Travel to Jekyll Island and enjoy an afternoon cruise on the Lady Jane Shrimp Boat. You will witness an actual net pull and talk about what is brought onboard the ship, and then released back into the coastal waters.
Afternoon check-in at your Jekyll Island hotel where you will be staying for two nights. Dinner this evening is included at a local restaurant. After dinner, we visit the Tidelands Nature Center, located under some of the darkest skies in Georgia.
Weather permitting we will see the moons of Jupiter though their 7 inch telescope. You will hear stories about some of the stars and learn how to find true north at anytime of the night. You will also learn how birds and sea turtles use the sky to find their way home. (D)
Day 2 – Beach Walk – Sea Turtles – The day begins with a naturalist and a narrated morning beach walk. Learn about the coastal eco system, maritime forest and more. Returning to the Tidelands Nature Center we learn about Sea Turtles, Hermit Crabs and many other species of sea life. Our tour also includes a visit to the new Shark Tank.
Next is a picnic lunch at South Dunes Park, followed by a visit to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. The Center specializes in the rehabilitation of injured Sea Turtles. Return to hotel to freshen up before enjoying dinner at Ember, a local farm to table restaurant. (B,L,D)
Day 3 – Okefenokee Swamp – Depart for Home
Departing Jekyll Island after breakfast, you drive to the Okefenokee Swamp, the largest, intact and un-fragmented wetland wilderness swamp in North America.
Here you board a boat for a ride to the depths of the Swamp with narration from a naturalist. At this time of year we are sure to see many specie of birds that call the Okefenokee home during the winter months.
Once our cruise ends, enjoy a hamburger and hotdog cookout before loading back onto your bus for travel home. (B,L)
