Itinerary
Day 1 – Cadiz, KY – Evening Nature Program
Today, travel to Cadiz, KY and check into the Lake Barkley Lodge for a two night stay. Lake Barkley Lodge seems to have just emerged naturally from the wooded shoreline that surrounds it. Using a post-and-beam wood construction of Western Cedar, Douglas fir, and three-and one-half acres of glass, the recently renovated Barkley Lodge complex provides a lake view from the private balconies of most of the 120 rooms.
Dinner tonight will be at the Windows on the Water Restaurant located at the resort. This glass walled restaurant allows you to have panoramic and scenic views from any seat in the house while enjoying some good ol’ country cooking. After dinner enjoy a special nature program presented by the own park naturalist. (D)
Day 2 – 1850’s Homeplace – Elk & Bison Prairie – Golden Pond – Woodlands Nature Center – Badgett Playhouse
Enjoy a full breakfast this morning at the Windows on the Water Restaurant. Travel this morning along a roadway known as the Trace, a National Scenic Byway, that features lake vistas, wildlife viewing, and quite scenery.
Tour the 1850’s Homeplace, a living, working historical farm. Most of their crops and livestock are historic varieties from the mid-19th century, grown and harvested using period tools and techniques.
Next, visit the Elk & Bison Prairie. The elk and bison roam free on this 750 acre, bus-friendly fenced compound which is home to the American Bison and the first re-introduced elk herd in the Southeast. You will never get closer! Depart for Kenlake Resort for lunch at Aurora Landing. Enjoy a Southern style meal as you overlook Kentucky Lake.
This afternoon tour the Golden Pond Visitors Center & Planetarium. This state of the art facility features fun and entertainment under a 40 foot dome. Learn to identify the constellations on a simulated night sky.
Or head to the Golden Pond Observatory, where you can observe the stars through one of our four telescopes or spy solar flares through our Hydrogen-Alpha refractor.
Then visit the Woodlands Nature Center. You’ll find a variety of natural experiences-from the indoor discovery center to the live wildlife of the Backyard exhibits. The staff will teach you about the creatures or let you wander the wooded paths.
Dinner tonight is at Patti’s 1880’s Settlement voted Southern Living’s best non-chain restaurant in the Southeast. The pork chops are famous, but save room for pie and time for shopping. After dinner, walk across the street for a Branson style music and comedy show at the Badgett Playhouse. (B,L,D)
Day 3 – Depart
Enjoy breakfast at the resort before departing for home. (B)
